Lab 04: Configuring File Share Access

Instructions
  1. Download the answer sheet here
  2. You have been assigned a group of VMs to use throughout the rest of the semester. Use them.
  3. New VMs require customization before they're ready to use
    1. Customization happens automatically the first time you start the VM.
    2. Wait at the login screen for 5 minutes or until Windows reboots
    3. Once the reboot is finished your machine is ready to use
  4. Once your new VMs have been customized you must perform the setup procedures found in the appendix of your lab manual (starting on page 165). The following is a summary of those procedures. For step-by-step instructions please see the lab manual.
    1. SVR-DC-A
      1. Change the VM to use your private network
      2. Set the timezone (to Eastern time)
      3. Set IP address: 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 DNS server 10.0.0.1
      4. Set the computer name to "SVR-DC-A"
      5. Install Active Directory Domain Services
      6. Promote the server to a domain controller for adatum.com
      7. Create a domain user account with username "Student"
    2. SVR-MBR-B
      1. Change the VM to use your private network
      2. Set the timezone
      3. Set IP address: 10.0.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 DNS server 10.0.0.1
      4. Set the computer name to "SVR-MBR-B"
      5. Join adatum.com
      6. Enable file sharing
    3. SVR-MBR-C
      1. Change the VM to use your private network
      2. Set the timezone
      3. Set IP address: 10.0.0.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 DNS server 10.0.0.1
      4. Set the computer name to "SVR-MBR-C"
      5. Join adatum.com
      6. Enable file sharing
Important Changes to the Lab
  1. Your SVR-MBR-C VM doesn't have multiple drives. Anywhere you see the instructions ask for a drive letter, substitute with C:
  2. Exercise 4.4: Be sure to login as adatum\Administrator before attempting this exercise.
About Customization
The process of customization does two things, it gives your Windows VM a unique security ID (SID) and it installs Cabrillo's licence key into the VM. The SID ensures proper network operation with other VMs. The license key enables Windows to register itself with Microsoft so it will be fully functional. You will see this screen when VMware reboots your VM:

After this Windows setup will run. It takes several minutes. You do not need to interact with customization.

Grading
  • 20 points for the assignment (-5 for each question/screenshot that's incorrect or missing)
  • Minimum of 5 points if you recorded the time it took you to do the assignment
  • 5 points extra credit for the Lab Challenge
